Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF)
is a water treatment process that clarifies wastewater (or other water) by removing suspended matter such as oil or solids. Removal is achieved by dissolving air in water or wastewater under pressure and then releasing the air at atmospheric pressure in a flotation tank bath. The released air forms small bubbles which stick to the suspended material which causes the suspended material to float to the surface of the air which can then be removed by means of skimming.
Dissolved Air Floatation is widely used in treating industrial wastewater from oil refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants, natural gas processing plants, paper mills, general water treatment plants and similar industrial facilities.

The dry solids concentration in the sludge may exceed 10 percent in certain applications, depending on the chemical program used.
